Important Information About Prescription Lenses
Before ordering your prescription mask, please read the information below carefully. If you are unsure which corrective lenses you need, we strongly recommend speaking with your optometrist before placing your order.
Factory-Made Prescription Lenses
Most prescription masks use factory-made corrective lenses fitted in standard dioptre strengths. These lenses are designed to approximate your prescription rather than match it exactly, which is suitable for most snorkellers and divers.
Custom-made lenses are available in some cases, but they are significantly more expensive and are usually unnecessary for general underwater use.
Types of Prescription Lenses Available
Depending on your vision requirements, prescription masks can generally be fitted with:
- Negative (-) lenses for short-sightedness (near-sightedness)
- Positive (+) lenses for long-sightedness (far-sightedness)
- Gauge reader lenses for reading gauges or small details underwater
Gauge readers are permanent fitted lenses rather than stick-on magnifiers and are only available for compatible mask models.
Understanding Your Prescription
When speaking with your optometrist, it’s best to explain that you are purchasing a snorkel or dive mask that uses standard corrective lenses available in 0.5 dioptre increments.
Most mask lenses are selected using your:
- Sphere (SPH) value
- Positive (+) or negative (-) dioptre strength
If your prescription falls between available strengths (such as 0.25 or 0.75), it is generally recommended to round up to the next stronger dioptre.
Astigmatism Information
Factory-made prescription lenses do not correct astigmatism.
- If your astigmatism is below 2.00, standard lenses may still work well for you, but you should consult your optometrist for advice.
- If your astigmatism is 2.00 or higher, factory prescription lenses are unlikely to provide satisfactory correction and a custom solution may be required.
Bifocals & Reading Correction
Full bifocal lenses are generally not available for standard prescription masks.
If you normally wear reading glasses and need help seeing gauges or small details underwater, gauge reader lenses may be a suitable option. You will need to know the dioptre value used in your reading glasses.
Important Advice Before Ordering
We are not optometrists and cannot determine the correct prescription lenses from your script. Your optometrist is the best person to advise which corrective lenses will work for your needs and whether factory-made prescription lenses are suitable for you.
Once you know your required dioptre values, simply select a compatible mask and choose the correct left and right lens strengths when ordering.
Ready to Use
Your prescription lenses will be professionally fitted before dispatch, so your mask arrives ready to use straight out of the box. The original standard lenses supplied with the mask will also be included.
